Live – Ross Levinsohn on the MySpace Ecosystem

I am currently sitting on the floor at the OMMA Conference in NYC where a bit earlier, Ross Levinsohn of Fox Interactive wrapped up a morning session discussing the future of online marketing. Much of his time was spent reviewing a lengthy set of statistics intended to lure advertisers to MySpace. However, one topic he discussed that caught my interest was the MySpace Ecosystem. When prompted with a question about the comments made by Peter Chernin last week, he responded by characterizing the MySpace Ecosystem like a double-edged sword. On one hand, the increased proliferation of Widgets on MySpace has played a tremendous role in reinforcing their explosive growth. On the other hand, external Widgets present unique challenges to MySpace with respect to competition, malicious or non-functional applications, and inappropriate content. During the discussion he alluded that MySpace had a number of projects in the works because at the end of the day, “they are trying to run a business. Those of you in the Widgetsphere have probably already checked out their initiatives in the space, as well as some of their efforts to compete with popular services that have gained traction with their users. Some other interesting comments from the head honcho from Fox Interactive: - The ad slow-down suggested by Yahoo is not endemic to the industry, MySpace is not experiencing the same issue - After 14 months they are the 2nd largest web property network on the planet - Fox Interactive reaches 50% of the 18-24 year olds on the web Ironically, Ross Levinsohn asked the audience if anyone was blogging. Well, Ross, I was blogging. In fact, I was blogging about you. :) Staci from Paid Content also was in the audience. See her post for more information. Later!

Tribe is Widgifying.

For those of you that live in a hole and do not follow the gospel laid down by brother Pete Cashmore at Mashable, check out the new site redesign at Tribe. According to Pete, they are now enabling their end users to leverage Widgets (they call ‘em modules) to personalize their social spaces…
The biggest change, however, is a Netvibes-style homepage, allowing you to drag and drop various modules like your friend’s photos and blog entries, your tribes, upcoming events, your del.icio.us bookmarks, RSS feeds, personal notes and links. The homepage is separate from your existing public profile page, which already allowed users to add videos from YouTube and Google Video, display photos, import blog entries and more.
I checked it out and found the interface to be a bit primitive at present. It seems that they do not allow you to import/export at present from what I found. That being said, I am hopeful that under their new (old) leadership, Tribe will continue to innovate around this feature area. The site already discusses that they are going to work on the export functionality. Surprised they picked THAT first. :) Either way, good luck to Mark Pincus and his crew. We wish you the best of luck! technorati tags: , , ,

Sexy Widget

Sexy! :)
While surfing the Widgetsphere, I found this cool blog discussing Widgets called - you guessed it - Sexy Widget! This blog is brought to you by the self-styled widget aficionado, Lawrence Coburn and offers in depth reviews of some of the hottest new Widgets. His reviews follow the format:
  • Overview
  • Applications & Opportunity
  • Configuration
  • Testing
  • Editorial
  • In short, it is kind of like Widgetoko with deeper discussion. Also, he has all kinds of neato bling all over his page to play with. Anyway, enjoy this resource folks. I added it to my sidebar for those of you that like to stop in and visit the rest of the Widgi-cult via old school hyperlinks. Later fan-boys! technorati tags: , ,

WidgetCon – The Birth of an Unconference?

For those of you that have had your head in the sand, you should definitely check out emerging discussions on WidgetCon - the conference on Widgets! See below for the play-by-play on the evolving story. If this event happens - which looks likely given the demand - the historical evolution of the conference will be something interesting to remember. It is definitely growing in a manner that is consistent with the collective participation theme that pervades the Web 2.0 movement.
  • Dare puts out interest in a Widget Conference in a P.S. statement posted on a rather loaded post on the nature of Web 2.0 Conferences
  • Om kindly volunteers to host Dare and others at an informal event. Seth from Meebo and a bunch of others (including Clearspring) volunteer to throw in some help.
  • The man with his ear to the ground, Marc C, starts to get the word out (he is good at that).
  • Tim Post, Widget enthusiast extraordinare, is now also spreading the word. I am just waiting for Steve Rubel, Fred Wilson, and Mike Arrington to start chatting on it. I am excited to help in any way to make this event a success. Should be good times.
