Today
Clearspring Technologies and
NBC Universal are officially announcing a first-of-kind partnership. One of the largest media companies in the world will be working hand-in-hand with a widget syndication platform to execute a major cross-division strategic distribution initiative. This partnership is not just significant for Clearspring. It signifies a major shift for big media. They are officially moving away from a destination model and embracing the new model in web distribution - syndication.
The new model is media served a la carte. Video, text, audio, images, and applications are being exposed via web services and widgets. People are no longer are satisfied with the “go-to” content model, instead demanding a “come to me” web. - from Surviving Web 2.0 post
This announcement is particularly meaningful given the recent
Facebook F8 announcement. One of the fastest growing destinations on the web has officially opened their gates to widget developers. And now big media is officially playing along. I guess Newsweek was right to declare 2007,
'The Year of the Widget.'
For Clearspring, this part of a series of major announcements (see
Clearspring/CBS announcement) as we continue to execute on our mission of being the most scalable syndication platform on the planet. Believe it, or not, we have a couple more tricks up our sleeve. Stay tuned gang - this summer is going to be exciting.
I think it is safe to say we are witnessing the official beginning
Web 3.0. To read some early commentary on the announcement check out
Pete and
Alex's posts.
p.s. As an aside, it is amazing to see how fast this space is growing. I remember last summer when my brother and me were writing the first web widget definition in Wikipedia. ;)

From
an article written about AOL circa 2001:
"There is an all out war going on between those who promote the Internet and powerful corporations who are attempting to stifle the growth of the Internet.
AOL pretends to be the internet, and restricts user access to web sites that don't pay them."
Fast-forward. It's 2007. Eliot Van Buskirk from Wired writes an article entitled,
"Note to Everyone: MySpace Is Not the Web. Get Ready to Move On" where he states:
...MySpace isn't the web -- it's a business...Why should the company serve up its audience to YouTube, Sony and everyone else who wants a piece of the action for free?
Sound familiar?

A couple folks caught wind of the fact that
Clearspring is working with
Akamai. So I figured it might be a good time to shed some light on this bad boy...
In case you missed it, Akamai is getting into widgets in a big way with their
StreamOS product. StreamOS is a rich media content management system. As you can imagine, many of their customers want to syndicate that content via widgets. According to
CNET:
"People can make widgets with changing video to use with their desktop or MySpace page, as long as the content provider allows it in its distribution rules.
'I think everyone realizes that not everyone will come to them, to their site. Viral distribution is not something that is going away,' said Suzanne Johnson, senior product marketing manager at Akamai.
So how does Clearspring fit in? Duh. StreamOS widgets are powered by Clearspring. This is the first of a couple major partnerships that we will disclose over the next couple weeks. Stay tuned. :)

Hey kids, I will be at the
Web 2.0 Expo Mon-Weds. If you want to talk widgets, social networks, or generally just geek out, drop me a line. Or swing by
my session Tuesday...
Using Widget Syndication for Online Marketing and Measurement
Track: Marketing and Community
Date: Tuesday, April 17
Time: 2:40pm - 3:30pm
Location: 2002
2007 has been proclaimed "The Year of the Widget." Whether widgets live up to this hype or not remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain, widgets are going to continue to grow in importance.
This talk will center around outlining the widget syndication trend, discuss why widgets work and why they don't work, and look at the latest in widget metrics and analytics. The talk will also discuss the use of widgets as a innovative marketing platform: why would you deliver your marketing message through a widget; what are the pros and cons; how can you build these promotional widgets; and how can you measure their effectiveness.
Hope to see some of you there.
p.s. Dave M., I definitely owe you a drink. :)
